We Are the Media

I just found this video by Nas, “Sly Fox,” a scathing criticism of mass-produced media, empty analyzations of violence in hip hop, and the racism and shallowness of the FOX franchise.

That’s some shit right there. I’ve got newfound respect for Nas.

Pastoral Indiana

A couple of weeks ago we visited my friend Heidi at her family farm in rural north-central Indiana in Pulaski and Starke counties. It was a sunny and gorgeous day harvesting and washing pumpkins for the upcoming Halloween holiday, the kids running around us, playing with fat, sleepy puppies, while we worked our butts off to reap payment in heirloom pumpkins. Sadly the only camera I had on me was my cell phone, but nevertheless, I updated the blog design with what I got.

More Moral Than Thou

Huh:

In his new book, Society Without God, Phil Zuckerman looks at the Danes and the Swedes—probably the most godless people on Earth. They don’t go to church or pray in the privacy of their own homes; they don’t believe in God or heaven or hell. But, by any reasonable standard, they’re nice to one another. They have a famously expansive welfare and health care service. They have a strong commitment to social equality. And—even without belief in a God looming over them—they murder and rape one another significantly less frequently than Americans do.

Denmark and Sweden aren’t exceptions. A 2005 study by Gregory Paul looking at 18 democracies found that the more atheist societies tended to have relatively low murder and suicide rates and relatively low incidence of abortion and teen pregnancy.

Things That are Dope

I haven’t had any good news in a long while. I so needed this today.

All I have to take is one class and I can do it online, which means I don’t have to quit my job to get my teaching license. Since I don’t have to quit my job, we’re going to be okay in the meantime.

New goal: Have teaching license in hand by Fall of 2009, then apply for classes so I can get a second teaching license in Special Education, and cross off the last item on this list.

Sticks

I chuckled when I read this bit on the stick being inducted to the National Toy Hall of Fame, because E spent a good part of the summer in the backyard setting up and knocking down sticks in increasingly elaborate TKD forms.

I wonder if the cardboard box has a spot in the hall of fame yet.

Gettin’ Up

Swear, this is what I love about hip hop:

This has had my butt moving all week.

Also

I got new glasses. They’re pretty cute.

New Beginnings

Last night was phenomenal, yes.

I start my own new beginnings. I have a meeting with an academic advisor week after next, and today I picked up my academic transcripts so I can go back to school.

I’m finding out what my options are.

My math and foreign language grades are embarrassing, but I still graduated with a 3.11 overall (was a 4.0 before I started the math and language requirements) and had a number of semesters on the Dean’s List and with Semester Honors (again, before the math and language reqs). That’s nothing to scoff at, right? Sigh.

For the last year I’ve been deeply unhappy with my work situation and I’m ready to move on. With the economy being what it is, I don’t know how well I’ll do, but I’m committed. I have no idea how I’m going to afford any of this, time-wise or money-wise, but whatever. Spend some to make some, I’ve heard.
