The Best Compliment

Chef answered a knock on the door to find the mailwoman on the doorstep looking sheepish. “Can I ask you a weird question?”

“Sure.”

Our House
The original picture by the realtor. I’d have a before and after shot if it would STOP RAINING already.

She goes on to explain that she’s been driving past our house for two years, that she has a house very similar to ours that has the gigantic, overgrown shrubs like we used to, and that she’s getting ready to rip out these unwieldy shrubs, and she’s totally in love with all the work that’s been put into the flowers and new shrubberies, and OMG what are those flowers on the edge of the garden shemusthavethemimmediately. (The allium, natch.)

Chef wandered the yard with her trying to remember all the names of the stuff I’ve planted. Then he called me and I squee!-ed like a fan girl. Somebody’s getting a card next Christmas/April.

Meanwhile I’m taking mental notes about what worked and didn’t work so far after the obsessive bulb-planting I did last fall. I’m ripping out and/or transplanting some poorly placed daffodils and definitely filling in some spots around the side of the garden. Also, hostas, ferns, lilies, and petunias.

Holy shit your lavender tree. It was so beautiful!

The house does look much, much better without the shrubbery.

w00t, Faux Real Landscaping! I myself feel lucky that I got the grass to grow on my lawn. :)

Congratulations! That is quite a compliment. Someday I’ll have a yard other will covet.

This will be the 5th summer in my first house. The yard was so overgrown with weeds the size of trees that it took the first two summers just to rip all the stumps out. It looks pretty decent now. The first of the spiderwort is blooming just as the last tulip faded. The mums look like they will burst any day now. I’ve got to plant a few annuals, but it’s rained every available weekend. I really want to do more, re-build some beds and plant more shrubbery, but we are moving to Iowa City as soon as we can sell this house and find new jobs. Hopefully the next place won’t be coming from such a bad starting point.
