The boy is growing up.
His parent-teacher conference, melded with a student-sharing meeting at the school, went really well yesterday. He’s using his daily journal entries for class to expound on personal issues, and more often, daily updates for the teacher on Pablo, Merle, and Doug.
Tomorrow he tests for his yellow belt in Tae Kwon Do, and on Saturday he competes in a local pianist recital for his second year trophy by playing this song:
I know what Ethan is wearing on Saturday.

I don’t know when “House of the Rising Sun” became a common teaching tool for piano students, but I remember learning it when I was about his age, sans lyrics, and playing it non-stop at my grandfather’s retirement party until my older cousin Julia Lea gently asked me to stop because it was slightly inappropriate. I didn’t know why until much later.

I love House of the Rising Sun. It wasn’t until a few years ago that I learned exactly what the song was about, even though I knew the lyrics. Weird.
I also didn’t know until recently that the song was originally sung from the perspective of a woman, until the Animals did their version. There’s a really good version by Nina Simone floating around somewhere.
Yep–they do grow up!!
Sounds like he has one proud mama; remember you should be proud of yourself for being such a great mom.
