Too Much Excitement

Well then.

I was planning on going to bed early tonight until Chef and I heard a gigantic boom and ran out into the front yard, where a woman had totaled her SUV in the snow against one of our trees.* We called the police and made sure she was calm enough (she reported that her boyfriend had broken up with her within the hour) and warm enough (it’s about eight degrees without the windchill) and briefly chatted with the next door neighbor — nicknamed “Bongo” — about the accident while the police officer surveyed the scene.

Bongo’s truck was totaled less than a week ago by a young man in a sports car who thought he could take the snowy curve in front of our house at 60 MPH. Sadly for Bongo, the young man was mistaken.

UPDATE: Five days later, Chef finds a piece of bumper in the garden.

_________
* The police informed Chef that the trees are technically city property. Chef let him know he’d give the city a call if the tree wanted to file any complaints.

The officer actually kicked the tree and said, “Doesn’t seem to be that much damage to the tree itself.” Meanwhile, there is an SUV with no front end resting in the middle of the road, and a recently broken-up-with young woman roaming our yard while sobbing. Tomorrow i will have a talk with Tree, and we will decide who to sue.

Yeah, it’s funny how they’re city property when the city feels like it, but I bet when the leaves fall, they’re suddenly your property to clean up, right?

That’s crazy, though. A similar incident happened in Ypsi a few weeks ago, where a woman took a curve in the road waaaay too fast, and lost control of her. Except that she actually drove through an apartment. She was okay, but she was really startled. Luckily, nobody was renting the apartment at the time.

Your road has never felt all that safe when school’s in session.

You could go to all of your neighbors and recommend speed humps/bumps.

Perhaps even some lovely lady speed humps/bumps.
