Aforementioned coworker Sally suggested several names for our spelling bee team: a) Spell Or Die, b) Spell Fast, Die Young, and 3) Carpe Spell’um. So far, number three seems to be the pick. We are open to more suggestions. As someone who is also rooted in the white, heteronormative, lower-class values in which I was raised, I often find that I get defensive. I may not say anything but it is easy for me to feel that someone else's experience somehow takes away from my own. I don't quite know how to express it coherently but sometimes it's like I won't get credit for how hard my life has been if I acknowledge that I cannot understand another's struggle. To type it out loud forces me to confront how asinine it is but there it is. For the most part I try to inwardly acknowledge it, not act on something I know to be jack-assery, and learn to move on from this place of defensiveness. It's nice to know I'm not alone.
