Cheating for Charity

I’m not sure how much 1200 grains of rice actually is once it’s heaped all together in a bowl, but this little vocabulary game purports to donate 20 grains of rice for every correct vocabulary word. Bonus: it doesn’t time you, so if you don’t know the word you can still look it up.

My step-father told me about this a few weeks ago. He said that thanks to him spending some time the night prior, 4,000 grains of rice were donated. I asked him why the rice couldn’t just be donated outright, without the falsity of goodwill, seeing as how we plump Americans can drive to the corner MalWart and buy a whole whopping POUND of rice for under three bucks. Then he called me a socialist and told me I couldn’t come to his house anymore.

Well, the thing is there are these little advertisements that appear every time the screen changes (i.e. when you pick a word). So this is really a variation of something that’s not new; the proceeds from viewing advertisements are used to support a cause. I’m not against that and I do think that improving your vocabulary makes viewing ads a lot more palatable. However, I do wish that people would just skip the middleman and donate directly to the charity because it would probably result in more money actually being available for use.
