To this day I ask myself, “What can be so bad about getting your wisdom teeth removed?”

What can be bad? Let me tell a story about a 18 year old guy who had to get his two lower wisdom teeth removed, since they were growing sideways. One of them was removed without problems, and everything was fine. The other one, on the other hand, had to be broken into small pieces, and the anaesthetics didn't work. Something the dentists didn't believe until they started drilling into my lower jaw, and saw my reaction. The removal of the teeth took over 4 hours, and to this day (14 years later) my brain refuses to focus on how much pain there were.

I was lucky that I healed fast and without incidents, unlike our poor host.

Get well fast Lauren.

When I had my wisdom teeth removed, I stayed up all night before my surgery, so when I got back home from the appointment I crashed big time. All the sleep gave the wounds time to heal. Plus, I didn't have to worry about wanting to smoke or eat or whatever while I was out of it. Woke up with no problems. To this day I ask myself, "What can be so bad about getting your wisdom teeth removed?"

Then I meet some poor bastard like Lauren...

UGH.

I'm with you, just had an extraction/excavation/bone graft on Friday. Right now I can't write for spit (or spit at all, not that I do very often) and am having metaphorical, vague, unfocused blogging apnea (kinda sorta, you know what I mean...?). The hardest part is not futzing with the stitches. >.

Hope you're feeling better today - I share everyone's horror of dry sockets and miserable dental pain. And hope this isn't going to be a fiscal disaster on top of all the misery!

It's catching - I have a dental issue as well.

Know that the pain you are feeling (or not feeling - Percocets yay!) is shared by a stranger in another state.

I was soooo afraid of dry socket when I got my teeth out, and I never got any real painkillers so I was chugging the Aleve. And I couldn't keep my tongue out of the gouges in my gums. They were so creepy.

Now I’m back in the first circle of hell where I belong. Even when you're miserable, you crack me up.

Also, at first I thought the title referenced "dry socks." On re-read, "sockets" clearly makes much more sense.

Sorry you're still dealing with this crap.

Oh no. Dry sockets is the worst, and it seems that no matter what you do, you just might get it. My dentist told me as much- they can't really tell for sure why some people get it and others don't. I remember it being an interesting pain, though (as far as these things go), like a high singing zing all through my jaw and somewhere in my ear. Something about the nerve in the bone being exposed to air. I don't want to think too much about that.

I sang myself to sleep that night, and stole some of my mother's pain medication before I went back to the orthodontist to have said pinkish sticky gauze stuffed into my mouth holes.

Get better soon and here's to a less drooly future for you.

When I go in for my wisdom tooth extraction in a few months, I'm asking for the oxycodone, baby.
