Because I’m bound and determined to learn GIMP, I plan to mess around with the blog design while I experiment. If things look bizarre, unfinished, and unmatched, get used to it. Helpful tips and tricks welcome.
UPDATE: Rotating banners: Russian nesting dolls from a small town fair, a Henry Darger illustration, green tomato from my garden, autumn in the backyard featuring floating watering can, Vernon’s office at Graceland, and more to come.

THAT’S what autumn in your backyard looks like? It’s beautiful. No wonder you’re conflicted about Indiana.
Autumn here is brown palm fronds and decapitated purple fountain grass. Not complaining, but it’s certainly not as spectacular as what you’ve got.
My backyard is kind of an anomaly. I’m on a weird, busy corner, the house takes up 1 1/2 lots (big front yard), and have something like five other lots that touch mine, so there is a lot of vegetation to block the view inside the house, especially on the back and side, where you can see in from the street. The backyard is what sold me on the house because it’s so luscious in the spring and summer. It’s been dubbed the Green Oasis.
Here are some more pics of the backyard for some perspective — really long but shallow. Also note the yellow wire of death.
edit: I broke the link.
Now I’m crying over all the shots of poor Doug in the window.
FREE DOUG!
Your garden is fabulous, it must take a lot of work too keep it that way.
When you’re done with GIMP, you should take a look at inkscape (www.inkscape.org). It’s a free vector illustration program, and in my opinion a very good one. If you’re using paths a lot, then it will probably be a good companion to GIMP.
Here are the pics.

ok, I’m officially a little jealous. My garden is a 4 foot by 6 foot balcony six stories up. On the other hand, I’m 3 minutes from the El and an Amtrak station.
You’re using Gimp! That puts you one step closer to Linux!
It is now my goal to make you a true cheap, comic book-reading, bespectacled, weakling nerd.
My backyard has a picture of the Oakland Hills. But only because I rent :-(
Previous to that, my backyard was the Lafayette City Garage and then Second Street and then the railroad corridor.
You do have a beautiful lot, and whether you end up moving or not, I do hope you enjoy the virtue it has while you’re there :)
The nesting dolls shot is great, too, BTW.
Yeah, Indiana really can be that beautiful. I miss them hills. Stupid prairie…
I love the office photograph. The one of the duckies kind of scares me, though. Like you and Lord Vigo, except without the whirl of ectoplasm.
Delurking to say thanks a lot! Now I will be spending days playing around with Gimp…damn feminist weblogs with their inspirational powers. But seriously thanks, you’ve given me the push I needed to finally get some motivation and learn how to use an image editor thingy.
