Heh. Linda Chavez is Jewish, sort of. She underwent some sort of quickie conversion so that a rabbi could marry her to a Reform Jew. However, she's flip-flopped on her religious affiliation ever since. Guess it depends on who's paying for the rubber chicken she's eating...

[...] Amanda Marcotte has posted a notice at Pandagon that she has resigned her position with the Edwards campaign following the attacks from Bill Donohue. Her post begins: I was hired by the Edwards campaign for the skills and talents I bring to the table, and my willingness to work hard for what’s right. Unfortunately, Bill Donohue and his calvacade of right wing shills don’t respect that a mere woman like me could be hired for my skills, and pretended that John Edwards had to be held accountable for some of my personal, non-mainstream views on religious influence on politics (I’m anti-theocracy, for those who were keeping track). Bill Donohue—anti-Semite, right wing lackey whose entire job is to create non-controversies in order to derail liberal politics—has been running a scorched earth campaign to get me fired for my personal beliefs and my writings on this blog.
[...] Amanda Marcotte resigns from Edwards ‘08 I really don’t think Amanda should have resigned. I think Donohue is getting the impression that his smear campaign was a success. On the other hand, Amanda now has more freedom to say what she wants about the Religious Right. I expect to hear Donohue whine like a little bitch about what will be said about him and the Catholic League. My hope is that is whining will move this story back to the mainstream media for an update where the other side of the story will be presented, effectively destroying Donohue’s image. Here’s Amanda’s announcement from Pandagon: I was hired by the Edwards campaign for the skills and talents I bring to the table, and my willingness to work hard for what’s right.
I didn't know that Alan Keyes, Tom Monaghan and Dinesh D'Souza were part of the Catholic League. What a bunch of wankers.

as for this:

>According to United States law governing the behavior of 501(c)(3) organizations, it seems highly likely that William Donohue--President of the Catholic League, a 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization--may have broken the law by attempting to intervene in a political campaign.>

HA ha.

like he'll get as much as a slap on the wrist, but it's still rather satisfying.

there's quite a lot of 501(c)(3) religious organizations that, surprise, are rather liberal about the application of federal guidelines to what they actually do for political campaigns, considering how decidedly -un-liberal they are about everyone else's business.

i once sent in a complaint to the I.R.S. about this one organization, a Catholic evangelical outfit that had rather detailed and explicit voters' "guides," partly because one asshole who worked for 'em and was trolling a board i was on pissed me off so much. dunno if anything ever came of it. i doubt it. but, again: momentarily satisfying.

Interesting that none of them appear to be priests.

Why no! They appear to be conservative heavyweights with publishing deals who make regular stops on Fox News and CNN. Huh.

And today’s brand of anti-Catholicism is more virulent and more pervasive than ever before in American history.

I wouldn't be so anti-Catholic if the Catholic Church wasn't so ass-backwards when it came to important issues such as family planning and AIDS prevention.

I'm down with religious freedom. I also support church/state separation, which means godbags can spout their hatred all they want, but they have no right to mess with politics. --Unless they'd like to start paying taxes.
