Saturday Joint

It’s a shame we had to have the Gnarls Barkley radio mania for the mainstream to take notice of Cee-lo Green other than as an add-on collaborator for other people’s songs. For one thing, he’s a fantastic singer (if a so-so rapper) and fond of an earlier style of soul that really compliments his voice. Dude works it and it works. Secondly, even though Goodie Mobb was a mixed bag of messages one thing that you can see and hear in all of Cee-lo’s work is a real celebration of blackness. Finally, one thing I require of my favorite artists is fun. This song “Closet Freak,” one of his more successful singles as a solo artist, is fun.

Useless Trivia: If I’m right, his ex-wife Christina Johnson is the background singer in white.

When I need an aural pick-me-up I listen to this song. It’s a celebration of Cee-lo the persona, but it’s so goddamned funky I can’t help but move.
