Saddam Hanged

Some Arab media, including Saudi-owned Al-Arabiya and the U.S.-financed Al-Hurrah, reported about an hour before daylight Saturday (about 10 p.m. EST Friday) that Saddam had been executed. There was no confirmation from the Iraqi government…

…Saddam and others were convicted of murder in the killings of 148 Shiite Muslims from an Iraqi town where assassins tried to kill Saddam in 1982.

Also to be hanged were Saddam’s half-brother Barzan Ibrahim and Awad Hamed al-Bandar, the former chief justice of the Revolutionary Court, the adviser said.

    What a waste. From every possible angle, what a waste.

    And, oddly, I find myself feeling sad. I’m strongly anti-death penalty, but I never thought I mourn the passing of that piece of human filth. Yet, here I am, doing just that. I’d so much rather see him rot away in a cell, stripped of everything, remembering every day just how far he’d fallen.

    Thank you for being smarter than the copy desk jockey at the Washington Post who used the incorrected “hung” in a version of the story that appeared on the Intertubes earlier this evening.

    incorrected = incorrect.

    Shit. That takes some of the weight out of my comment, doesn’t it?
