I caught a weird documentary on HBO last month called “Soldiers in the Army of God: America Undercover.” A camera crew followed several members of this “army” for a year, documenting their violent anti-choice activities and beliefs as the members farted them out. Before the movie I told Chef I hoped they would provide a counterpoint, but about halfway through he turned to me and said, “We don’t need a counterpoint. Any responsible person could watch this and realize how insane this is.”
Indeed.
The Army of God is a faction of the anti-choice movement that is largely responsible for the bombing of women’s clinics and sniper shootings of abortion providers. Famous names associated with this group include Eric Rudolph, Clayton Waagner, Rev. Michael Bray (the “chaplain of the Army of God”), Neal Horsley (creator of the Nuremburg files), and Paul Hill (executed in 2003 for killing a doctor in Pensacola, FL). Most of their philosophy and group information is scattered all over the internet, so if you’re interested do a Google search. I won’t throw links their way. For an extra special treat, see why they think birth control is evil.
Anyway, reading up on this group’s terrorist activities was educational in itself. If you read the discussion at wikipedia on how the Eric Rudolph page is maintained you see a lot of apology on his and their behalf — and many Christians who are justifiably uncomfortable with labelling Rudolph a “Christian terrorist.” What is it if not that? One can only wonder what the War on Terrorism would look like if the Bush administration expanded their definition of terrorist beyond Middle Eastern Muslims and their sympathizers.
Watch the movie if you get a chance, if you’re into horror flicks. These people are horrifying.

When I was a kid I got to see the Olympics in Atlanta. We were in Centennial Park the night it was bombed, but we didn’t know what happened and just went home.
re: domestic terrorism
Just because you don’t see it being covered in the MSM, doesn’t mean it isn’t being watched.
Bet you didn’t know of the ex-pat Cuban caught in So. Cal with over 1500 weapons in his home in a residential area (including grenades, 50 caliber weapon and machine guns) now on trial in Fed court who claims he had the arsenal to help an invasion of Cuba to overthrow Castro.
Feds and local law enforcement keeps tabs on all manner of neo-Nazi, white supremacist groups and gangs … including everything from Church of Christian identity to Earth Firsters.
In keeping with her usual accuracy, Darleen has included a mainly left-wing, largely feminist-influenced group in her list of two “Neo-Nazi white supremacist” organizations.
We will now pause while she attempts to figure out which one.
Professional Bowler’s Association?
I remember the Earth First slogan: Get Blamed for Setting a Condo Fire in Maryland for Jesus!
Church of Christian Identity is “left wing”? Since when?
I was pointing out that domestic terrorism runs the gamet from fringy left (the enviro-terrorists) to fringy right (white supremacist ie Aryan Brotherhood)
Oh why can’t Darleen go away like Jeff G*ldstein?
MH
What have I commented that is either controversial, wrong or trollish?
I work in the judicial/law enforcement system. Isn’t it nice to know that domestic terrorism is not being ignored?
Why do one tend to think of people that you respect of being older than one, even if one knows it’s not so? This little remark reminded me of the fact that you’re probably younger than me, since I was 21 years old back then (and traveling the US at the time, though nowhere near Atlanta during the Olympics).
How creepy was that Jonathon O’Toole? Brrrrr!
What a freak.
I watched that documentary, and every person in it was clearly insane. I would bet money that Jonathon O’Toole and Bob Lokey are both homosexuals and have tried everything they can to convince themselves that there not. But regardless, as a Christian myself I can safely say that not a single person in the so-called Army of God is a Christian and they in fact smear every single real Christian by calling themselves that. Murdering doctors and firebombing clinics is the most insane thing I have ever heard of. The “Army of God” is quite simply a home grown terrorist organization and the U.S. Government should treat them in the same way they would any other terrorist group.
I think HBO does a great service to the public when they document groups like that because its important for people to realize these people are out there. The way Bob Lokey joked with that terrorist wearing the priest’s collar about all the ammonium nitrate fertalizer he had with him was disgusting and disturbing.
